We are kicking off the new year with our much needed, long awaited, master suite renovations! I have Pinned, Googled, and YouTubed as many ideas as I can take. I have talked Shawn into almost all of all my ideas. We are as ready as we ever will be.
This is the current layout of our bedroom, bathroom, and the mudroom. I like to refer to it as "The Hall of Doors". There are a total of six doors swinging into this 290 sq ft of space. The door to the master bedroom opens off the living room right into the center of the bedroom. The only closet is 2'x4' and has a door that opens into the bedroom, and the bathroom door is only 2' wide and again, opens into the bedroom. The bathroom then has a door that opens into the mudroom, the mudroom opens into the kitchen, and of course there is a door to the back deck in the mudroom as well.
When we first moved into the house the laundry hookups were in the mudroom but only fit a stackable set, which the kitchen door opened into. The current "master closet" takes up the available space for the vanity and there is next to no closet space (all of my seasonal clothes are in containers under the bed).
And here is the new layout! This summer we renovated the hall bath and converted part of it into a new laundry room, allowing us to free up the space in the mudroom for a walk-in closet. Look at how the (only three!) doorways all open into available wall space rather than swinging through half of the bedroom! We will close off the doorway from the mudroom to the kitchen, convert the back door into a window, and the mudroom becomes our walk-in closet. We will be moving the toilet to expand the size of the walk-in shower to a 5'x3', and we will remove the tiny old closet so that we can expand the size of the vanity. In the bedroom, the door moves to the side of the room for added privacy and gives us a much needed empty wall to put the bed against.
Yesterday we bought the wardrobes for the walk-in closet. There was a 15% off sale so I couldn't pass it up. Here is the new configuration for the walk-in closet with floor to ceiling wardrobes. There will be a full length mirror against the left wall and a small bench under the window.
Demo starts on Monday. This is timely because my shower head broke about a week ago so I've already moved all of my bath accessories into the new hall bath. Meanwhile, my new wardrobes will be sitting here in boxes for the next 2-3 months.
We used a contractor to renovate our hall bath so this will be our first major DIY. I will be chronicling the renos as we go to share our trials and tribulations... and to try to keep us on track. ;)
Here we go! As Colton keeps saying, "Let's do this."
Wish us luck!
